Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station encourages audiences this month to get into the Halloween spirit by presenting “Hitchcocktober,” a month long series of Alfred Hitchcock’s horror films.
Every Thursday night in October, the Angelika hosts a free outdoor screening of a Hitchcock classic. Angelika hopes that while the films may scare audiences, the price will not.
Although the tickets are free, the film center encourages moviegoers to bring their own seating to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere. Attendees may bring lawn chairs, cushions and blankets to screenings on the pavilion, located on the side of the Angelika box office.
Rain or shine, the show will go on said Angelika Film Center management. The screenings transfer indoors on nights of inclement weather. Attendees earlier this month experienced the spooky spirit of the season with Hitchcock’s “The Birds” and “Rear Window.” Rick Valadez, manager of the Angelika, said the screenings have had a great turnout so far with about 50 people every Thursday.
Tonight, Hitchcocktober continues with the classic American horror film, “Psycho.”
The 1960s original version of the film “ushered in an era of inferior screen ‘slashers’ with blood-letting and graphic, shocking killings,” according to a review from American Classic Movies.
Audiences may be most familiar with the infamous “shower scene,” which has kept movie fans squealing in suspense for 40-plus years. Bravo recently ranked the scene as number four on its list of “100 Scariest Movie Moments.”
“Psycho,” named the number one thriller of the century on American Film Institute’s “100 Years … 100 Thrills” list, starts tonight on the Angelika pavilion at 8.
Hitchcocktober concludes next week with a screening of “Dial ‘M’ For Murder.” This will be the last opportunity to catch Alfred Hitchcock’s award-winning and groundbreaking horror thrillers at the Angelika this season.
