Dear Editor:
As I agree that Mike Dement should be gone after the season, itis time to take a hard look at SMU’s support for majorDivision I athletics.
Take these questions into consideration:
• How is SMU going to buy out Dement’s contract?
• Where is the funding to update Moody Coliseum?
• Where are the new practice facilities?
• Should the Athletic Director Jim Copeland still bearound?
• How can you expect Dement to compete against schools thatallow non-qualifiers (Fresno), partial qualifiers and juniorcollege transfers?
Fresno State, Hawaii and Bosie State all allow juniorcollege transfer students and have been doing fairly well in theWAC in basketball and football. The administration needs to bringin a consulting team to evaluate major athletics at SMU andfigure out why a school 30 miles west seems to be doing OKnowadays. While SMU is a good school, there is no reason it shouldbe so hard for a student to transfer if he would like to play atSMU. If drastic measures aren’t taken, SMU will continue towaddle in mediocrity in men’s football and basketball and seeattendance dwindle even further.
By the way, I would read www.ponyfans.com before Ed Board makesany other comments like that. There are actually some educated fansout there on that board.
