SMU’s Women & LGBT Center and Spectrum tabled at the flag pole Thursday Oct. 11 for National Coming Out Day.
Volunteers from Spectrum, an LGBT student organization, informed students about upcoming events with the Center and Spectrum. They also gave out pronoun buttons and rainbow cookies from JD Chippery. There was also the opportunity to open a rainbow-painted door and take pictures with a flag that represents you.
“It’s the 30th anniversary of National Coming Out Day–not here at SMU but National Coming Out Day– so it’s really important to be out here and visible for students,” Women & LGBT Center director Dr. Sidney Gardner said.
As the new Women & LGBT Center director, Gardner appreciated the opportunity to meet students across campus.
“It’s also really important for me to be out here and have the opportunity to really meet the campus community. It’s my seventh week, so I’ve been really looking forward to this ability to connect with the broader campus and community,” Gardner said.
Spectrum will be holding the LGBT Equality Forum on Tuesday Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.– 9 p.m. in Hughes-Trigg.
