Why did we have class on MONDAY?
Martin Luther King was a remarkable man who led our country through civil rights movements that unquestionably changed our nation for the better. Without a doubt, he should be honored for his exemplary leadership. Although we should remember him regardless, SMU shows even greater respect by not having class on MLK Day so that we can honor his achievements.
I believe however, that SMU shows a double standard in not allowing us the same privilege when honoring President’s Day. 43 great men have served our country with remarkable leadership and foresight. President Lincoln abolished slavery, President Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize, and George W. Bush has introduced democracy to the Iraqi people. Our veterans of war (which is another holiday when classes are held), have lost countless lives in defending our country. Yet, as a university, we do not honor all of these men in the same way. Was equality not the foundation of Dr.King’s argument for a “better America?”
I am not suggesting that we should have a day off for every possible Federal Holiday (except for maybe Columbus Day where we can honor the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria). In fact, the great past leaders of our nation would probably have desired that we attend class every day so that we can better assist our country in the future. I am merely suggesting that we should honor the great leaders of our country in the same manner and not be worried that SMU may acquire a negative reputation for not showing “special” attention to certain holidays.
