Janielle Dodds became the 15th player in SMU women’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points on Sunday afternoon. Dodds’ field goal with nine and a half minutes left in the game gave her the milestone.
The Mustangs rode Dodds’ team-high 19 points to a 67-64 win over the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks.
Brittany Gilliam also reached double digits in the points column with 13.
SMU took a solid 36-27 lead at halftime and shot an impressive 45.8 percent from the floor, and was a perfect 2-2 from the three-point line.
The second half was a different story for the Mustangs.
Early in the second half the Mustangs grabbed their largest lead of the game, with a 43-29, 14-point lead. But the Mavericks came back over the next 15 minutes and made the game interesting.
SMU’s shooting percentage dropped to 37.5 percent and the Mustangs didn’t make any of their three three-point attempts. The Mustangs saw their lead diminish point by point over the last 15 minutes of the game.
The Mustangs went cold over the final three minutes of the game, where they did not score a point. The smallest lead of the game was three, but time ran out on the Mavericks and the game ended with a Mustang victory.
Last Thursday the Mustangs were not as fortunate. SMU traveled to Fort Worth to take on the Horned Frogs of TCU.
The Mustangs took a 43-38 lead into halftime thanks to a 48.5 shooting percentage and 40 percent from the three-point line.
But the shots wouldn’t fall in the second half as the shooting percentage fell 19 points to 29.2 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from the three-point line.
The Mustangs needed more than freshman Alice Severin’s team-leading 16 points, and a double-double from Dodds to finish off the Frogs.
The Mustangs could only score 28 in the second half and fell 83-71.
SMU will next play Saturday against North Texas.
