With jackets on and a cup of hot chocolate in hand, SMU studentsgathered Tuesday to celebrate homecoming at StudentFoundation’s third annual “Live from theHilltop”.
One day after the election, this year’s event was unlikethe past as the President Bush’s win over John Kerry addedflare to the traditional kickoff rally.
For sophomore economics major Tiffany Smith, “Live fromthe Hilltop” was the perfect end to what she called the bestday of her life.
“Both of my classes were cancelled today, George Bush willbe President for four more years, and above all, I am so excited tobe here tonight,” she said.
Other Bush supporters were not afraid to voice their excitementas homecoming queen candidate Rachel Romero gave a short cheer forthe President.
“Go W,” said Romero after introducing herself to thecrowd.
Senior Nicki Lyons, homecoming queen candidate for theAssociation of Black Students, said that it was interesting to seethe presidential elections held at the same time as SMU homecomingcourt elections.
“It is nice to have homecoming during the elections sothat election spirit carries over to school spirit,” shesaid.
Despite the results of the elections, some students attended”Live from the Hilltop” to support homecomingcandidates and to have a good time.
Michael Rahm, a sophomore finance and political science doublemajor, said that he feels closer to the SMU community this year andwanted to participate by showing school spirit.
“I am braving the weather by coming out heretonight,” he said. “However, my SMU spirit is keepingme warm.”
Other events of the evening included an opportunity to throw apie in the face of your favorite homecoming candidate and a liveperformance by the band Ingram Hill.
Sophomore marketing major and member of the Student FoundationHomecoming Committee Carlyn Helmuth said the goal of the committeewas to increase attendance of the students who are not infraternities or sororities.
“We thought we would get more participants if we broughtout a band,” she said. “It’s a good way to getthe whole campus involved.”
Although the presidential election is over, homecoming king andqueen elections will be held until 11 p.m. tonight. StudentFoundation urges students to participate by logging on to the SMUWeb site to vote.
