Hello,
My name is Courtenay Paris and I am the Station Manager of KPNI SMU Radio. As I am sure you know, we have an event coming up this Sunday, Sept. 21 with the band Hanson. They will be on campus doing a walk for AIDS research and treatment. One of our own DJs and also a columnist for the Daily Campus got an interview with Isaac Hanson and had it confirmed by the A&E editor that it would run in today’s Daily Campus. When I picked up a copy of the Family Weekend issue of the Daily Campus, I found the front page to be very spacious. A huge picture, an even bigger pie chart, and very little text. I fail to see how an Associated Press article makes the front page of the Daily Campus and a student interview with a celebrity who will be on campus doesn’t. I’m going to be honest here, I feel like you didn’t just not run the article but that you made an active effort not to. All throughout the paper, pictures seem bigger than necessary, and the amount of AP articles compared to student written articles is very high. The entertainment section had three AP articles. I’m going to have to question the judgment you used in deciding an article about a lost Mozart song would be more appealing to the student body than an article about an active band that would be on campus this weekend. When I open a college newspaper I want to read about things that affect me that are written by people who I have a common bond with: students. KPNI SMU Radio is representing the voice of the student body, and I assumed the Daily Campus should be trying to do the same. I have put in so many hours working to put this event on and publicize it. I would really have appreciated the support of the campus newspaper by running the article before the event, especially after they promised to run the article. I would love to hear back from you and gain some enlightenment on the decision making process for the things that I spoke of.
