Response to John Jose’s editorial on Fri. Sept. 19,
We are pleased that John Jose has called attention to the work of the University Honors Program-debate is healthy, and as we chart the future and seek to further improve the program such discussions will be central. We do however vigorously disagree with his premise that employers are only concerned about one’s major coursework as the best graduate, law, medical schools and companies give us contradictory information. For the most demanding of life’s challenges in whatever form a sound liberal arts education is essential. The UHP is proud of its challenging and exciting seminars, and seeks an even more developed and coherent curriculum for students of all majors across the campus. Jose will be happy to read that the Centennial Campaign launched just Friday lists as Dedman College’s No. 3 goal to, “Expand the University Honors Program through enhanced curriculum, internships, study abroad opportunities and extracurricular activities.” Stay tuned for developments.
