After winning its first game at Westcott Field, the women’s soccer team hits the road again for the Saint Mary’s Invitational, where it will take on Saint Mary’s and No. 13 University of California at Berkeley this weekend.
Coming off a 1-0 win over the University of North Texas last weekend, the Mustangs are 1-2-0 heading into the tournament and a three-game road series.
Starting off the tournament is a Friday night match up against Saint Mary’s (2-3-0), beginning at 6:30 at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels, coming off a 2-1 win over the University of Texas, posts one loss at home. Their other four games were won or lost on the road.
With a 1-5-1 record in the West Coast Conference last season, Saint Mary’s continues to struggle this season, going 0-2 in the Denver Tournament at the end of August.
Last time the teams met in the tournament in 2005, SMU came away with a 1-0 overtime win.
The second game, against nationally ranked UC Berkeley, will be Sunday afternoon at 2.
The 4-1 Cal Bears, coming off a two-game sweep at the 15th Annual Cal Invitational with wins over Texas and Texas A&M, have suffered just one loss during their season to Portland.
In the last meeting between the Mustangs and Bears, Cal walked away with a 5-0 win.
Currently leading the Mustangs is freshman Kenzie Scovill, the only player on the Mustang roster to score a goal in the Mustangs’ three games. Scovill had her first collegiate goal in the ninth minute against the Mean Green, blasting an unassisted shot into the corner of the net past UNT goalkeeper Mandy Hall.
Mustangs goalkeeper, sophomore Courtney Webb, also heads to California coming off a strong performance, recording her first shutout of the season and second in her career last weekend.
SMU takes on the University of Texas at San Antonio next weekend before returning to the Hilltop to host No. 5 University of Portland Piolets on Sept. 20.
