Christmas comes too soon
Every year it seems to appear earlier and earlier. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it. I do. But we’ve barely made it to Thanksgiving and already the Christmas theme bombards us.
This year my first exposure to the Christmas hustle and bustle was at Starbucks. On Nov. 5, I received my first holiday coffee cup. The bright red cup is a nice change from the drab white that usually has to perk me up in the morning. But Halloween had just passed, Thanksgiving was still weeks away, and already signs of Christmas?
It’s difficult to enjoy Thanksgiving with the Christmas theme already invading all aspects of our lives. Coffee shop and radio stations play holiday tunes, shop windows overflow with holiday decorations, and every advertisement I see has to do with gift giving ideas. The season of red and green is upon us.
Christmastime reigns as my favorite time of year, however I want to enjoy it when it’s close to occurring, not in early November when the Thanksgiving turkey hasn’t even been purchased. With all the pre-Christmas commotion, by the time the holiday actually rolls around I’m quite bored with it all.
December magazine issues hit the shelves in early November with special articles about “hot holiday gifts” and “the best buys for him and her.” Billboards and commercials also advertise what should be packed, wrapped and put under the tree. However, I can’t even begin to think about gifts until at least early December.
I’m anxious for my favorite time of year, but can’t we get through Thanksgiving first? When December rolls around we should be full of energy for the upcoming holiday. I want to be peppy and excited rather than burnt out on all the green and red that’s been around for the past month.
