The women’s soccer team wraps up the final leg of a three-game road series against the University of Texas at San Antonio on Friday night. Following Friday’s game, the Mustangs will return to Westcott Field to host the No. 2 team in the nation, Portland.
SMU (1-4-0) heads into this weekend’s games riding a two-game losing streak, dropping a 3-2 loss to Saint Mary’s and another 4-2 loss to the No. 9 University of California at Berkeley in last weekend’s Saint Mary’s Tournament. Despite a pair of losses, senior defender Kim Peabody and junior midfield transfer Leslie Briggs were named to the All-Tournament team.
Friday’s game against the Roadrunners (3-4-0) marks the third meeting between the teams, with SMU holding a 2-0 advantage. In the first meeting between the teams, SMU shut out UTSA 5-0 at Westcott Field. One year later, in 2007, SMU won again at home, defeating the Roadrunners 2-1.
Leading the Mustangs will be freshman forward Kenzie Scovill, who currently leads the team with two goals on the season, including the team’s game-winning goal over the University of North Texas.
Looking ahead to the game against Portland, the last time the teams met was in the 1995 Women’s College Cup semifinal game. SMU stumbled against Portland, surrendering 4-2.
The last time SMU defeated Portland was in 1991 when SMU came away with a 2-1 victory. Portland prevailed in 1994, defeating SMU 5-3 in overtime.
SMU will begin Conference USA play next weekend, then take off on another two-game road trip beginning against Colorado College on Sept. 25, and the University of Texas at El Paso on Sept. 27.
