This Friday the Dallas Museum of Art will host several performances, featuring the Earl Harvin Trio to conclude the Late Night Tribute to Gordon Parks, Half Past Autumn.
Gordon Parks, Half Past Autumn presents around 130 of Parks’ photographs produced between 1940 and 1997. Friday’s audience will be privileged to see a screening of Parks’ 1971 urban classic, “Shaft,” at 9 p.m. in Horchow Auditorium after Gordon Parks’ son David Parks gives a lecture on “Photography’s Role in the New Millennium” at 7 p.m.
Headlining the show is the Earl Harvin Trio. Their eclectic improvisational jazz uses elements of punk, pop and even hip-hop. The performance resumés of the three men include stints with Cake, The The, Aimee Mann, Chris Isaak, Psychedelic Furs, MC 900 Foot Jesus, Seal and spots on movie soundtracks for “Lost in Translation” and “The Virgin Suicides.” The trio takes the main stage in the Hamon Atrium at 8 p.m. following an impressive Dallas-based tap group called “The Drawbacks,” who kick off at 7 p.m. in the Atrium. Also at 7 p.m., photographer Tesa Morin will demonstrate modern photo techniques with a scanner and Photoshop in Gateway Gallery.
After the trio, DiverseSoulz, the breakdance and beatbox crew, will bring home the night at 10 p.m. in the Atrium.
To help you through the galleries, DJ Viz will spin a fusion of funk, hip-hop and jazz in the Barrel Vault while other solo performers play in various galleries.
Happy Hour starts at 6 p.m. in the Atrium. The DMA offers Late Night Open Mic, insomniac tours and free Starbucks coffee all night long.
The Dallas Museum of Art is located at 1717 North Harwood in the heart of downtown. Admission for students with their IDs is $5 and they charge another $5 to park, so ride the DART!
