For the first time since 2000-01 the Mustangs opened up the season with two wins against NCAA Division I schools.
Defeating Illinois State on Sunday afternoon and McNeese State on Monday afternoon.
On Sunday the Mustangs escaped with a victory after playing a less than stellar game. SMU shot only 40 percent from the floor and 10 percent from the three-point line. The Mustangs also had only seven assists compared to 22 turnovers.
Ike Ofoegbu led the Mustangs with 21 points and Devon Pearson led SMU with 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs’ three point lead was erased by a Dominitrix Johnson three-pointer with only 26 seconds left in the game.
DerrickRogers missed a shot with seconds left, but Devon Person tipped in the rebound to give the Mustangs and head coach Matt Doherty their first wins of the season.
Monday’s game was a different story for the Mustangs.
After a lackluster first half, SMU shot 60 percent on field goals and 82 percent from the three-point line to give the Mustangs a 70-54 win.
Turning around a first half that saw SMU take only a two-point lead into halftime, grew to a 16-point victory.
The Mustangs also improved their assist to turnover ratio, comitting only 12 turnovers and having 18 assists.
SMU will take on host Florida State tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Florida State has defeated McNeese State 85-65 on Monday and Illinois State 73-59 last night.
The Mustangs have never played a game against the Seminoles.
