The Mustangs look to remain undefeated in Conference-USA play against South Carolina on Wednesday night.
The SMU men’s soccer team goes head to head with conference opponent South Carolina Wednesday night at Westcott Field. Ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week this season.
The only conference loss the Mustangs suffered last season was a loss in Columbia, S.C. at the hands of the Game Cocks. The 3-0 loss put the then No. 9 ranked mustangs 8-1 in the conference. This season the Mustangs come in with a 3-0-1 record and get to play at home.
The Mustangs are led by head coach Schellas Hyndman who posted his 350th win against Tulsa. The team notched its third C-USA victory last Wednesday night as it defeated rival Tulsa 2-0. SMU added another tie to its record after facing UCF this weekend in Florida.
The Gamecocks are the defending C-USA champions and are ranked anywhere from fourth to 16th so far this season by the four national college polling Web sites. In conference play, South Carolina is 3-2, and 10-3 overall. SMU’s performance against Tulsa demonstrated yet again the team’s defensive strengths with goalkeeper Matt Wideman making five saves.
The offense dominated the first half with two goals, but appeared tired and inconsistent in the second half. South Carolina will come out strong offensively with senior forward Mike Sambursky and freshman midfielder Jeff Scannella. Samburksy has been named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and scored the only goal in the Gamecocks’ C-USA championship victory last year.
Sambursky leads South Carolina with five goals and eight assists. Scannella is second in overall scoring for South Carolina with three goals this season. On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Mike Gustavson has 38 saves and six shutouts so far this season.
SMU’s offense will have to be on top of its game this weekend to defeat South Carolina. Senior Chase Wileman leads the Mustangs with eight assists. The team captain is ranked 21st in the nation for assists. With sophomore Scott Geppertt scheduled to undergo ACL surgery today, players such as Adrian Chevannes and Bruno Guarda will need to step up their goal-scoring abilities.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Dallas. The game will be televised with a tape delay on CSTV.
