The Mustangs are currently the only undefeated team in NCAA soccer
A strange thing happened during the first half of the SMU men’s soccer game versus UCF on Saturday: the Mustangs allowed the Golden Knights to score. Twice. The SMU soccer team traveled to Orlando, Fla., this weekend to face conference opponent UCF, who are 3-7-2 for the season and 1-2-2 in conference play. The Golden Knights came out strong offensively in the first half, getting two goals past the Mustangs’ generally impenetrable defense. This is only the second time in the season that an opponent has scored two goals on the No. 1 ranked SMU team. The first time was during a 3-2 SMU victory over FIU in late September. The tie with UCF ended the Mustangs’ perfect C-USA record, making them 3-0-1 in conference play and 13-0-2 for the season. Both of the Golden Knights’ goals came in the first half of the game. UCF sophomore Mike Mattson scored the first goal 13 minutes into the game. He assisted junior James Georgeff’s second goal, which was a header off Mattson’s free kick, at the 39:50 mark. SMU wasn’t scoreless much longer as sophomore Bruno Guarda put one past UCF’s goalkeeper in the 43rd minute. SMU stayed down 2-1 until the 83rd minute when senior Chase Wileman shot a penalty kick into the Golden Knights’ goal. UCF and SMU went on to play 10 minutes of overtime, but both teams were unable to break the tie. SMU has four games left before the C-USA championship begins Nov. 1. Remaining opponents include South Carolina, Marshall, Memphis and UAB. Soccer America.com still has SMU ranked No. 1 in this week’s poll, but the other three national college ranking Web sites had not yet updated their polls at press time. The Mustangs return to Dallas this week to face South Carolina on Wednesday at Westcott Field at 7 p.m.
