Former SMU Mustang Jay Needham has made an impact in just one season in the pros. Needham was named the United Soccer League’s Rookie of the Year.
After being drafted in the third round of the MLS draft, Needham decided to go in a different direction. He signed with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL.
Needham played in 25 of the Islanders’ 30 games and totaled over 2,000 minutes. He scored one goal and had two assists in his first season.
During his time with the Mustangs, Needham was one of the tri-captains in his junior and senior years. In his senior year, Needham was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the best collegiate soccer player in the nation.
Needham finished his SMU career with 10 goals and 10 assists while playing in 87 games.
