The SMU women’s soccer team has now won 11 games in a row after defeating Marshall and East Carolina this weekend at Westcott. The wins move SMU up to No. 15 in the socceramerica.com rankings, but the updated NSCAA/adidas poll was not available at press time.
The opening of the two-game home stand was against the University of Marshall Thundering Herd. The Mustangs got on the board early and never looked back.
Morgan Field scored her first goal of the season on a one-timer off a centering pass from Olivia O’Rear and the Mustangs took the 1-0 lead just 20 minutes into the game.
That is how the score stood until just over 10 minutes left in the game when Kimber Bailey connected on her seventh goal of the season from the top of the box, Kristen Moran assisted along with O’Rear picking up her second of the game.
The Mustangs topped off the scoring with just under two minutes left on Kim Peabody’s fourth goal of the season. Once again it was O’Rear helping along with Carley Phillips.
Ashley Gunter only had to make two saves in SMU’s 3-0 victory. It was Gunter’s eighth shutout of the year and the Mustangs’ tenth.
The Mustangs took their momentum into Sunday afternoon’s match against East Carolina.
SMU needed just one goal to defeat the Pirates at Westcott on Sunday. More than willing was the team’s leading scorer Olivia O’Rear.
O’Rear tallied her team leading 12th goal of the season after gathering a loose ball off an ECU deflection and put it into the net.
The one goal was all Gunter needed in net. Making one save to earn her ninth shutout of the season.
O’Rear’s goal and three assists add to her team lead in goals, and give her the team lead in assists. The notable stat for O’Rear is how she has stepped up in conference games. Six of her 12 goals and four of her five assists have come against Conference-USA opponents.
The Mustangs improved their record to 14-2-1 on the season, extending their winning streak to eleven games, and have gone 7-0 in C-USA.
The Mustangs will finish up the regular season on the road before returning to Westcott for the C-USA tournament.
SMU will face UCF and Southern Mississippi this weekend.
