To whom it may concern:
We, the Chapters of the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), are aware of the drug and alcohol crisis currently facing the Greek community of SMU. The MGC does not in any way condone the recent drug and alcohol violations committed by a few university-sanctioned fraternal organizations. We believe that it is the responsibility of all student organizations to ensure, to the best of their ability, that alcohol is distributed responsibly.
As a show of good faith, our chapters have unanimously decided to place a moratorium upon all currently scheduled social events in which alcohol might be made available for the consumption of chapter members and guests. This moratorium will begin on Friday, Sept. 21 and will be in effect until Sunday, Oct. 21. While the fundraising generated by such social events normally provides over half of our chapters’ semester-based profit, the MGC is willing to sacrifice the opportunity to generate revenue in order to demonstrate our continued commitment to the health and safety of SMU’s students.
During the weeks to come, the MGC intends to ensure that each and every one of our members is well-educated regarding the SMU Student Code of Conduct’s drug and alcohol policy and is prepared to uphold the terms of the Greek Relationship Statement with the integrity and consistency worthy of our Letters. It is our fervent hope that our friends and peers among the Interfraternity, National Panhellenic and Panhellenic Councils are prepared to do the same.
We pray that any Greek organizations recently in violation of SMU policies will find the courage to institute change among their current procedures and thus demonstrate a sense of responsibility as befits today’s young adults and tomorrow’s leaders.
In good faith,
Yasmine Alvarado, MGC president; Martha Garza, Alpha Psi Lambda president; Dara Ake, Kappa Delta Chi president; Daniel Fernandez, Omega Delta Phi president; Anna Dominguez, Sigma Lambda Gamma president; Sandra Wu, Sigma Phi Omega president.
