Former SMU basketball standout Derek Williams has been drafted by the Harlem Globetrotters in the team’s 2010 draft class.

Williams, who led the Mustangs in scoring (16.6 points per game), was the fourth-leading scorer in Confference USA. The Queens, N.Y., native also was named to C-USA’s all-conference third team.

He also became the 17th player at SMU to score 500 points in one season, and the 18th player to exceed 800 points in two seasons.

Williams led SMU to a win against Memphis last season with a game-high 25 points and won an award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Harlem Globetrotters have played in 120 countries and territories on six continents, entertaining more than 130 million fans entering their 85th season.

Other college basketball players who were drafted include: Mark Titus from Ohio State, Marqus Blakley from the University of Vermont and Chris Roberts from Bradley University.

All draft picks have been invited to training camp in the fall.
