The SMU women’s tennis team played a solid tournament in Houston over the weekend. The Mustangs played well in every aspect of the tournament and dominated many of the opposing players.
In singles play, Neveklovska dominated Texas’ Marija Milic (6-4, 6-3) in the final match of singles tournament. On her way to winning the tournament, Neveklovska beat Salina Aranda of Lamar (6-3, 6-2), Jane Pringle of Texas (6-2, 6-2) and Rone Van Wyk of Arkansas State (6-4, 6-4).
SMU coach Lauren Longbotham-Meisner was happy to see Neveklovska play to her full potential and beat tough players from all the teams in the tournament. Longbotham-Meisner was happy that all of Neveklovska’s hard work finally paid off with a tournament win.
In other singles action, SMU junior Kristen Reid played also played well. She won in her first match of the tournament by scores of 6-1 and 7-5. The win came over Arkansas State’s Paula Chelminska. Reid lost her second match of the tournament, but was able to finish 3-1 overall in the tournament. She won her next two matches against Lamar’s Anahita Jagtiani (7-5, 6-0) and Pringle (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).
In doubles play, Neveklovska teamed up with Kseniia Tokarieva and beat the team of Pringle and Sarah Lancaster 8-6. They fell in the final to the team of Baylor’s Bielikova and Texas’ Liu. They finished off the tournament on a positive note by winning both of their matches in the consolation bracket.
The Mustangs play again this weekend when they travel to Waco to compete in the Baylor Inviational. There are matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday that will provide the Mustangs with a chance to build on their success in Houston.
