After suffering through a four-game losing streak, the Mustangs have gotten another streak going – this time in the win column.
SMU traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to play and defeat the Golden Eagles 69-65.
The Mustangs got off to a rough start, shooting just 39 percent in the first half. The Mustangs were also hurt by two early Janielle Dodds fouls. The Golden Eagles shot 52 percent to take a seven-point lead into halftime.
But the second half turned the game around in the Mustangs’ favor. SMU’s 39 percent turned into 52 percent while Southern Miss’s dropped from 52 to 33 percent.
The Mustangs were led by Katy Cobb with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Three other Mustangs joined Cobb in double-digit scoring: Alice Severin had 13, and Sharee Shepherd and Delisha Wills had 10 points each. Wills led the team with nine rebounds.
The half began with a 7-0 run started with a three-point shot by Cobb that turned things around for SMU.
The Mustangs’ strength was their bench. It outscored the Southern Miss bench 19-3. Jillian Samuels added seven points and Brittany Barker added two points to Wills’ 10 off the bench.
The Mustangs will now return to Moody for a four-game home stand beginning Friday night against East Carolina. The Pirates share a 5-5 conference record with SMU and are coming off a win over Memphis. The game will be Friday at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum
