A variety of student acts and host Austin Powers, played byentertainer Phil Parsons, delighted a packed McFarlin Auditorium onFriday night at the annual Family Weekend Talent Show.
Greek houses performed their traditional,”Sing-Song”-like skits, while some students chose tobrave the spotlight on their own, singing or playing their choseninstrument.
Half of the sorority and fraternity acts chose to stay in linewith Family Weekend’s “Welcome to the Jungle”theme. Chi Omega and Sigma Chi performed their skit “Rumblein the Jungle,” incorporating hip-hop style dancing withacrobatics to awe the crowd.
“We had a great time getting to know some of the guyswe’d never met, and we also had a great time spending moretime together as sisters,” sophomore Chi Omega AshleyWhisnant said.
All the performers had time to hang out together, as well.Practices for Friday’s talent show had been running deep intothe night all last week. For one group, staying up late was not aproblem.
Boaz Hall, the only residence hall to have a skit, performedtheir original piece “Mr. or Mrs. Boaz Hall,” whichresembled an “American Idol” talent competition.
The four students that chose to perform solos included Gamma PhiBeta’s Sarah Jobe, who sang her rendition of Selena’s”Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and first-year Keith Kobylka, whomelted hearts with a self-composed guitar piece.
“I wrote this on the night of my senior prom,”Koblyka said to the crowd.
The composition, entitled “Finding Me,” had asimilar style to the Dave Matthew’s Band, with one verse sungin Spanish.
To finish the night, Parsons led greek members in a round of SirMix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.”
