Dallas was not seen as a primary contender in the hip-hop industry until Cedric “Big” Tuck emerged onto the scene.
Known as an earnest member of the dynamic group Dirty South Rydaz, Big Tuck has undoubtedly made his mark in the hip-hop world by releasing over 32 mixtapes and selling over 100,000 copies independently.
Big Tuck’s commended 2004 underground release, Purple Hulk, was so successful that it caught Universal (Motown) Records’ attention.
In December of 2005, Universal signed a deal with T-town Music, lead by CEO George Lopez, Trinidad Delgado and Alan Powell and began preparations for Big Tuck’s first major release, “Tha Absolute Truth.”
Before his all-star hip-hop career, Big Tuck’s circumstances weren’t so convenient.
He grew up in “Sunny” South Dallas and experienced hardships, which he now postiviely refers to as stepping stones to his success.
“My past life experiences relate to and helps my music because I have seen and done everything so all that I speak about in my songs is absolute truth, which makes it all fun and easy. Besides, without struggle there’s no progress, so I’m thankful for the hard times,” says the Dallas native.
An aspect of Big Tuck’s life that helped motivate him through his ups and downs was his music. In fact, his emergence into the rap scene began with writing poetry and playing musical instruments. He’s been playing percussion since the fourth grade, and attended the University of Arkansas on a full music scholarship.
Now, he is currently learning to play the guitar and piano. Since he writes, plays and composes music, it is clear that Big Tuck’s talents go beyond rapping.
“I want people to know that it’s okay to be and express themselves any way they feel because music is an art,” exclaims the hip-hop champ.
There is no doubt that Big Tuck’s upcoming first major release will be worth every penny. I’ve had the opportunity to hear some tracks from the album including the fiery single “I Know You Want That” featuring platinum recording artist Chamillionaire. Other blazing tracks include “Monster” and “Tussle” featuring Slim Thug and DSR co-member, Tum Tum.
Tha Absolute Truth also features other guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Bun B, Paull Wall, and the rest of the D.S.R. click. The highly anticipated album is scheduled to drop on Dec. 12, and Tuck is readily accepting the challenge to get the ball rolling for Dallas.
“Mark my words,” says Tuck, “I have the realest album of the year.”
