Sen. Larry Craig’s behavior is unacceptable. Not only did the man plead guilty to a lewd conduct charge, but now he is trying to take it back. His flip-flop decisions sparked another controversy Tuesday after the senator announced he “may” not be resigning. This comes just three days after he claimed he would resign on Sept. 30.
Craig’s actions at the Minnesota-St. Paul International Airport back in June were inexcusable and unexplainable. As a public figure known for campaigning his wholesome family values, his behavior screams hypocrisy.
Meanwhile, the most frustrating part of this ordeal is the senators’ insistence that he is not gay. He keeps stating, “I’m not gay!” like it is some life-threatening disease.
We don’t care if you’re gay Mr. Senator, but we do care that you were practically soliciting sexual behavior through a bathroom stall. The issue at hand is not your sexual preference, but whether you acted in a perverse nature. What you pleaded guilty to doing is unacceptable.
Even though the Senate does not call for inquiry into misdemeanor charges facing it’s participants, it does not mean Craig should not consider resignation. Clearly the senator has a lot to sort out in his personal life. History has proven that scandals such as this one do not heal well with public opinion.
We can get past the fact that Craig made a mistake, but only if he is capable of owning up to it and if he stops commenting on his sexual preference as if being gay means the end of the world.
It’s selfish of the senator to take back his decision to resign. And more importantly, it is just plain foolish of him to think he can change his plea with his reputation unscathed.
It’s time for Craig to face the consequences of his actions and stop bouncing back and forth.
