SMU’s Hegi Family Career Development Center has created a new leadership group entitled the Career Center Advocates (CCA) that will begin its role on campus with a special kick-off in the Career Center today at 5 p.m.
The newly formed group will assist the Career Center with its mission to guide and encourage students in the development of skills necessary for a lifetime of career management in the constantly evolving world of workplaces.
The Career Center created the group because of the number of students on campus who are unfamiliar with its services.
A student focus group held last year found that the students who did maximize the services at the Career Center found it to be very helpful and considered themselves better prepared to find internships and full-time jobs. Marva McGrew, Career Center assistant director of employer services, believes that expanding the number of students the center interacts with will increase job opportunities for all SMU students.
“Knowing that students are so prepared will attract more employers to recruit at SMU,” McGrew said.
Through an application and interview process, the Career Center selected four students leader for their new CCA program. The students, picked based on outgoing personalities and responsibility, are first-years Rachel Carey and Monica Edwards, Patrick Kobler and junior Raul Rosales.
These students will be responsible for getting the word out about the center’s different services and events.
They will also complete tasks involving publicity for the center, discover the most effective ways to market to the student body and interact with campus organizations, other outlets for student involvement and faculty to market the center’s services. As a whole, the mission of this leadership team is to raise awareness about the opportunities and services the career center provides for the SMU community.
The advocates will reach out to their peers, encouraging them to get the services that they need for a successful career.
“We are so excited to have our new student advocates to make the SMU student body aware of the many services offered by the Career Center,” McGrew said.
The Career Center hopes that these students will serve as the eyes and ears of the SMU student body and that they will help the Career Center to further their relationship with the students and to better SMU’s student’s professional lives in the future.
