Ed Board is mad. Really mad.
Waking up to snow should fill us with excitement, like it did during childhood. However, Wednesday was not one of those joyous days. The roads were snowy and icy early in the morning.
SMU did a good deed by delaying classes until 10 a.m., but did not do a good job with keeping the rest of the campus consistent with that decision.
Mac’s Place, the sole eatery for the South Quad, was closed for lunch and dinner. Residents were forced to brave the cold walk to Umphrey Lee Center, or worse, drive off-campus for a comparable meal.
If it’s not safe for the Mac’s Place employees to come to work, then it shouldn’t be safe for students to walk across campus or drive elsewhere for food. Several Greek housing cooks did not come to work today either, putting those house members in the same situation as the South Quad.
Also, some classes were cancelled while others went on as planned. Ed Board knows it’s always the discretion of the professor to hold class on day-to-day basis, but many professors sent e-mails yesterday telling students that the commute was too dangerous and class was cancelled.
If the commute is too dangerous for professors, then students should not be required to drive in the tumultuous conditions.
Even more annoying-one teacher posted a note on the door saying class was canceled. Are you kidding?! After everyone had already driven or walked to campus, Ed Board would rather just have class.
Most Dallas-area schools were canceled Wednesday, and most are delayed at least two hours today.
So while SMU students were sliding on Hillcrest (most BMWs don’t have four-wheel drive), other privileged kids were having snowball fights and sledding.
Doesn’t seem fair to Ed Board!
SMU did a poor job of coming together as a community and forming a single decision. Ed Board thinks that in similar future situations the campus should be a unified body.
By the way, here’s something else to make your blood boil: SMU was the only local university to hold classes Wednesday. UT Dallas, TCU and University of North Texas students all got to stay home in their pajamas and stimulate their brains by reading Us Weekly.
Now just sip your cappuccino and try to think warm, happy thoughts. Yeah, it’s hard for us too.
