There are only a few days left to “taste & see”what’s at the State Fair this year. The 24-day annual eventis coming to a close on Sunday, and with it will go an abundance ofexhibits, entertainment, livestock events, contest and rides todiscover.
Every year the No. 1 attraction to the fair would have to be thefood.
“Corny dogs, turkey legs and beer. I just go for the food.It’s everywhere,” fair attendee Wayne Luoma said.
The Taste & See Pavilion has a smorgasbord of chefspresenting quick cooking lessons. Wine tasting, product samplingand home shopping opportunities are also available.
Outdoor entertainment includes a garden railroad, theatricalface pacing and pumpkin carving demonstrations.
Future farmers of the world have a great chance to come andlearn the trades of a real farmer. “Little Hands on theFarm” is a series of hands-on work where young children actas “farmers” and complete chores on the farm rangingfrom egg gathering to planting seeds.
An event opened to car-lovers everywhere is the 2004 Auto Show.It’s the biggest new car show in the southwest. The auto showfills two huge exhibit halls and offers a first look at the latestmodels, plus a display of concept cars, pickups and SUVs.
For the culturally enriched individual “Texas Myths andLegends” offers an exciting exhibit at the Dallas Museum ofNatural History, which focuses mainly on the facts and fiction theold West illustrated in a series of entertaining displays andsculptures.
A part that has been integrated into the State Fair of Texasover the years is “Mundo Latino: Walls that Speak,” anexhibit of murals by well-known Texas Latino artists, documentaryfilms, music, dancing, “Little Mexico” exhibits,crafts, and Latin cooking shows.
“Mundo Latino is a very exciting event, it gives theHispanic people of the community something to look forwardto,” engineering and math major Claudia Johnson said.
Topping off a day at the fair is the Starlight Parade that windsthrough the park each night at 7:15 p.m. The parade comes completewith colorful floats, glittering costumes, and giant puppetfeatured with lots of acrobats to admire.
The State Fair of Texas takes place in Fair Park just two mileseast of downtown Dallas.
State Fair parking is $7 per car, but valet parking is alsoavailable for $20.
General admission is $12 with most of the fair’s shows andattractions included. Food, rides and drinks are purchased withfair coupons. Each ride cost one to 10 coupons, which can bepurchased at the ticket booths on the fair grounds for 50 centseach. American Express, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Also, forbig fair savings check out one of the fair sponsors, Kroger forexample, for discounts on fair admission before heading out andtrying the traditional corny dogs and cotton candy.
