The Hughes-Trigg theater was packed Thursday for SMU’s annual Mr. University pageant, held by the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Each year, representatives from fraternities and other organizations compete in multiple events, both fashion and talent related, to be crowned “Mr. University” by a select set of judges.
This year, contestants from 10 fraternities competed in three stages of the pageant. The first was the sportswear competition, in which contestants were invited to flaunt their physiques while the evening’s emcee Jessica Hosking read off statistics about each of the contestants. Mr. Lambda Chi Brad Skeba did his own thing as he made a hilarious attempt to switch around his polo while in the spotlight.
For the talent competition, Hosking introduced this year’s five judges to the crowd. Professors Adrian Tan and Michael Cruz from the sociology department were present, as was Clayton Littlejohnn and Birdie Barr from the philosophy and wellness departments, respectively. The fifth judge was Charlie Green, owner of Olivella’s Restaurant.
The acts in the talent show varied greatly, with contestants such as Mr. Phi Delt Kevin Ashmos simulating the “Evolution of Dance” melody and Mr. ABS Robin Johnson-Hood expertly juggling a soccer ball. Mr. KA Mike Montesi’s bit was especially funny as he attempted to play water glasses while in a gigantic lobster outfit, which he declined to give explanation for.
“This is just a sound check,” Montesi said to a laughing crowd as he made an attempt to play “Mary Had A Little Lamb.”
Other acts such as finger magic from Mr. Sigma Chi Matt Ellis and a piano medley from Mr. Chi Omega Kit Szybala were also entertaining as the contestants displayed great comedic sensibilities.
A “formal attire” event followed in which contestants were asked short questions to which they gave quizzical and occasionally funny answers. One chose to wear a pink jacket with a blue T-shirt, standing out from the other nine contestants.
After the formal competition, the judges announced that the frequently entertaining Montesi was this year’s “Mr. University,” followed by runner-up Mr. FIJI Rob Hayden and second runner-up Mr. Kappa Joe Sturdivant.
All money raised through this year’s Mr. University pageant will go to the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and to Pi Beta Phi’s local charities Promise House and Heroes for Children.
