The SMU women’s cross country is gearing up for the Texas A&M Invitational at College Station this Saturday.
The team opened the season in Waco at the Baylor Bear Relays. SMU teams took 10th, 11th and 12th place. The duo of senior Jessica Jackson and junior Magan Moore finished in 10th with a combined time of 29:45.43. Sophomores Anne Gustafson and Jessa Simmons weren’t far behind with a time of 30:16.43.
The team did even better in Houston when it competed in the Rice Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 9. SMU took second with 43 points, right behind host team Rice’s 34 points. Lamar took third with 78 points while Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Cristi rounded out the rest of the participants.
Junior Rachael Forish was SMU’s top finisher, taking second place in the 5K event with a time of 14:15.00. Jackson wasn’t far behind in sixth place with a time of 14:52.00. Sophomore Sierra Anderson placed 10th with Simmons and Gustafson finishing in 11th and 14th place, respectively.
Magan Moore (19th), senior Rachel Barber (30th), freshman Kelsey Howard (37th) and senior Courtney Dugan (38th) also participated in the Rice Invitational.
The Mustangs will face a number of teams this weekend including the University of Texas, Sam Houston State, Rice University, Prairie View A&M and UT-Arlington.
The women’s cross-country team heads to South Bend, Ind. Sept. 29 to participate in the Notre Dame Invitational.
