As it heats up this summer (an inevitable fate in Dallas), there is no doubt that gas prices will continue to fluctuate and increase. Given the debate over drilling for oil in Alaska and importation of oil, the price of gas will continue to be controversial for the foreseeable future.
But, as these prices increase it’s important to keep in mind the global prices of gas and how little Americans actually pay. More than that, if you are staying around SMU this summer, you will be glad to know that Texas has remarkably cheap gas compared to other states.
Moreover, if you travel overseas, you might think that the price of their petrol is quite low. Well, most European countries pay for gas in liters, not in gallons. So, take England for example, where gas is roughly 82 shillings, or $1.23 a liter with four liters to a gallon. That’s $4.92 per gallon – triple what we are paying.
Still think that the price is too high? Think of it as an incentive to be environmentally friendly. When is the last time that you have used public transportation or carpooled with a friend headed to the same destination? Or, when have you have used your own body power to get from A to B?
Don’t think any of those options will work for you? Maybe you should look into getting a new car – trading in the 12-mpg SUV for a fuel efficient Honda Insight that combines electric and gas power to achieve 61-mpg in the city.
Before you start to complain about how expensive gas is, take a look at how America compares to the rest of the world as well as your consumption habits. Perhaps the problem doesn’t lie in the price of the gas.
