My favorite professor recommended this collection of short stories to me when he heard I was a fan of G.K. Chesterton. In addition to being a contemporary, peer, and friend of a number of major intellectuals and writers of the 20th century, G.K. Chesterton was also a prolific writer and intellectual critic himself. Chesterton wrote about basically everything important religion, philosophy, humanity, culture, society and he influenced later writers such as C.S. Lewis and Ray Bradbury.
In the “Father Brown” short stories, Chesterton uses murder mysteries as a medium for social commentary and intellectual humor. I’m fond of using these stories to unwind before I go to bed at night. With stories at roughly twenty pages each, comprising two thick volumes in “The Complete Father Brown, “you can read a little at a time for a long time.
