Tired of that plain-jane hair color? Do you have hair that lacks spunk? Do you want to spice things up a little? Welcome to Hair Color 101.
Before you even think about coloring your hair or adding highlights to your do, your hair must be healthy! Healthy hair is the key to pulling off the color that you are after. If your hair is not in the best shape, hold off on any major hair makeover for a few weeks and take some time to give your tresses some much-needed TLC.
If your hair is fried from your blow-drying or flat-ironing, try a deep conditioner. Hair Mayonnaise is a great fix. Despite its icky refrigerator-inspired name, Hair Mayonnaise is a conditioner you can get from any beauty supply for under $10, and it works wonders!
Shampoo your hair as usual, but instead of using your regular hair conditioner, use Hair Mayonnaise and leave it in for five to 10 minutes. Try this remedy for a few weeks, and your hair will look noticeably more shiny and healthy.
If you’re looking for something a little more high-end, you can try these great products that celebrities use: Alterna’s Enzymetherapy Caviar Anti-Aging Shampoo and Conditioner or Age De-Phy Rejuvenating Shampoo and Conditioner by Philip Pelusi.
Assuming that your hair is in good shape, let’s talk color. Hair color really depends on your skin tone. Just because Gwen Stefani has platinum locks does not mean that you can pull it off! It’s all about making your hair color work for you.
Look at your skin tone and eye color for good jumping-off points when choosing a hair color to experiment with. Your skin color should not differ greatly from the undertones of your hair color. For instance, people with pink, rosy skin tones should opt for reds, strawberry blondes or cherry browns. Darker skin tones become brilliant when set-off by warm chocolate browns or dark blondes.
Eye color should follow these rules of thumb as well. The lighter your eyes, the lighter your can make your hair color go, and vice versa for dark eyes.
And, as always, celebrities with professional stylists are great people to get ideas from for your own personal style makeover.
