Getting around campus can sometimes be tricky. With so many people trying to get to so many different places on campus at all hours of the day, there is a constant barrage of traffic on the Hilltop.
The numerous ways people are trying to get around campus makes the situation even worse.
From people walking on the streets to bike riders and even a few Segway Scooters on the sidewalks, it seems like everyone is always in a hurry.
Ed Board thinks the SMU community needs to take a minute and slow down a little bit.
If you’re driving on campus, remember that many of your fellow classmates are trying to walk places, too. Share the road. After all, Bishop Boulevard is not Texas Motor Speedway.
Also, be mindful of the students who use the streets to bike to class. They’re trying to avoid hitting the people walking, so drivers, try to avoid hitting them, too.
For those of you who like to bike, try not to run people down when you’re on the sidewalks. You know that feeling you get when a car sneaks up behind you when you’re on your bike? That’s the same feeling people walking get when you sneak up behind them.
If you’re going to ride to class, why not get a bell for your frickin’ sweet Sledgehammer? You may feel kind of ridiculous at first ringing your bell as your cruise around campus, but your fellow students on foot will appreciate it.Just because you’re walking doesn’t mean you don’t have a responsibility to contributing to safe transportation around campus.
Make sure you look both ways before you’re crossing the street. Seriously, just because your parents aren’t around doesn’t mean you get to forget the basic things they taught you when you were growing up.
Once you get to your destination and you’re going inside a building, a little bit of civility will go a long way. Why not trying holding doors open for one another? It’s a great way to put a smile on someone’s face, inside of getting hit in the face.
Also, don’t forget to say “thank you” if somebody does get the door for you.
Ed Board doesn’t want to sound like a nagging parent, but everyone on campus could be more courteous to each other when getting around campus.
Let’s all do our part to make getting around our campus as safe as can be. With a few easy steps, we can make SMU a happier and safer place for all of us.
