The SMU women’s swim team looks for redemption this weekend as they travel to the University of Missouri to compete in the Missouri Grand Prix. The Mustangs fell to top-ranked Texas last weekend (150-87). Eight Mustang swimmers will head to the Midwest to try and keep their energy high. With conference play right around the corner, Coach Steve Collins says he is trying to gauge the girls this weekend to see how they will compete on Feb. 25 in Houston for the Conference tournament. “This event is a great opportunity for the swimmers to qualify for the NCAA Championships in March,” said Collins. The Missouri Grand Prix is just one of the several non-collegiate events during the spring season. Swimmers from all ages and nationalities come to compete in these events to help not only their school, but also their countries.Senior, Petra Klosov will try to keep her tempo as high as last weekend when she set her personal best in the 50 free in Austin. Freshmen Denisa Smolenova, Christy- Leigh Lategan and Raminta Dvariskyte will all be competing in the Grand Prix this weekend. Dvariskyte had the only individual win against Texas in the 200-breast stroke while Lategan swam her season-best time in the 1650 free style. “We are looking for all the girls to swim fast as we approach the Conference Championships,” said Collins. “The University of Missouri’s facility is world class, so we’re excited about being there with other top schools.”The Mustangs are 2-3 this season as they head into the weekend.
