The SMU women’s tennis team went 3-1 over the weekend, with its only loss coming against the Missouri Tigers, 5-2, on Saturday.
The Mustangs shut out Stephen F. Austin 5-0 on Friday, then posted consecutive 7-0 victories over Memphis and UT-Arlington on Sunday.
The Friday duals against Stephen F. Austin and Memphis took place at the SMU Turpin Tennis Courts. The No. 1 doubles pair of senior Natalia Bubien and junior Pavi Francis captured an early victory over the Lumberjacks 8-3 to improve its record to 8-1.
Not missing a beat, the Mustangs kept rolling on with a victory over conference opponent, Memphis.
In singles, Bubien posted a win over Memphis’ Marjorie Ondeck in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Senior Kseniia Tokarieva remains undefeated (6-0) after her 6-4, 6-3 win over Amanda Brown.
On Saturday, the Mustangs went down early by losing the doubles point to Missouri. Recent conference player of the week Nicole Briceno teamed with senior Kseniia Tokarieva to record the only doubles win.
Seniors Natalia Bubien and Monica Neveklovksa prevailed in singles competition, securing the Mustangs’ two points. Bubien smashed Missouri’s Mallory Weber 6-0, 6-4, while Neveklovksa defeated Maureen Modesto 6-4, 6-2.
After a devastating lost to Missouri, the Mustangs bounced back with a win over UT-Arlington, 7-0. Doubles play sharpened over the weekend as Briceno and Tokarieva teamed up for their fourth consecutive win by defeating Daiana Negreanu and Maria Romer 8-6.
After the victory over UT-Arlington Sunday, the Mustangs moved to No. 70 in the NCAA rankings. The Mustangs will host North Carolina State at 1 p.m. Friday.
