The Asian community ended its month-long celebration of Asian culture, fittingly named CelebrASIAN, with a very classy send off, by turning the Hughes-Trigg ballroom into its very own runway.
The final event of CelebrASIAN was the CelebrASIAN Fashion Show, hosted by Asian Council. The show featured dress and clothes from various Asian countries, including Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indian. However, the show was not just traditional clothing. The show also highlighted modern clothes designed by an Asian company named Fortune Denim.
“We mainly wanted to show traditional and modern Asian outfits inspired by cultural background,” said Jessika Chi, the programming and events coordinator of Asian Council. “That’s one reason we invited Fortune Denim, because they’re a denim line that is Asian inspired.”
The event featured twenty models. They were all SMU students and a majority were members or executive officers of the various Asian organizations. The models strutted their stuff as over 30 spectators cheered wildly and cameras flashed continuously.
The event was not all about flashy clothes and blasting music. Asian Council also paired up with Room to Read, a nonprofit organization devoted to educating children in developing Asian countries. Throughout the event, Asian Council collected gently used books for the nonprofit organization. Also, any profit made from the clothes sold by Fortune Denim went to Room to Read.
The Asian community was very pleased with how CelebrASIAN turned out, especially the large events such as the East Asian Student Association’s Night Market and the Vietnamese Student Association’s Movie Night and Student Panel.
Asian Council and its umbrella organizations hope they have brought Asian culture to the SMU campus over the past month. And if the number of students attending the events is any indication, CelebrASIAN has been a resounding success.
“Overall, I think [CelebrASIAN] went really well,” said Chi.
