The looming clouds Sunday evening didn’t stop volleyballs from going into the air outside Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. Alpha Chi Omega held its tournament Volley Against Violence despite inclement weather.
Their annual spring philanthropy event raised money for the Genesis Women’s Shelter. This year, each person paid $18 to play and help women and children who have suffered from domestic violence. While the final count of donations is still coming in, the planner of the event, Chelsea Stephens, feels the number will be an impressive one.
“We’re definitely going to earn more than last year,” she said
The choice for volleyball was an easy one “because it’s spring time and people love it,” said Stephens.
Nikki Cloer stood high over the teams of Alpha Chi and Theta volleying back and forth. With a loud whistle, one team would cheer and the other would try harder.
Stephens’ opinion that this year’s event was more successful than Kicking it for Kids may have been right as there was “more Greek involvement this year rather than non-Greek involvement,” said Katherine Frost, an Alpha Chi and volleyball tournament watcher on Sunday.
The looming weather threatened some players with a drizzle halfway through the game, but they continued playing through the evening. Beta Theta Pi had three teams playing to compensate for some absent teams.
Frost believed “if the weather [had been] better, [they] would have a better turnout.”
