The SMU men’s tennis team (11-8) finished last weekend with a 4-3 loss to the No. 46 California Golden Bears and a 5-1 win over St. Mary’s at the Beach and Tennis Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
In the first round of the Pebble Beach Collegiate Tennis Classic on Saturday, the sophomore doubles duo of Darren Walsh and Adham el- Effendi dropped their second match of the year (8-2).
Junior Chris Hooshyar fended off Eoin Heavey (6-3, 6-7, 1-0). Artem Baradach won another three-set tiebreaker, defeating Nick Andrews (3-6, 6-1, 6-3).
Capturing the Mustangs’ third victory of the day was sophomore Darren Walsh, who claimed his fourth consecutive win when he defeated Bozhidar Katsarov in a second-set tiebreaker (2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3).
On Sunday, the Mustangs claimed victory over Saint Mary’s, 5-1. Weather prevented the teams from playing doubles and moved straight to singles.
The top spots for the Mustangs continued to dominate in singles after Hooshyar extended his win streak to four with a victory over Achim Christner.
Baradach continues to lead the Mustangs as he improves to 15-4 on the season with a win over Maxime Olivan (6-2, 6-3). Freshman David Costa beat Luca Tirelli in straight sets playing at the one spot (6-4, 6-4).
