Although we may not always act like it, we are in college now. High school was a couple of years ago, yet it seems that some aspects from those four years seem to constantly creep into our college days.
SMU has recently been stirred up by a digital burn book: the Web site DirtyDTown.com. In short, this is a site created to exploit the residents of Dallas through pictures and video clips.
We’re not exactly sure how the DirtyD acquires its material, although we haven’t seen any photographers snapping away at any SMU parties recently, so we can only assume that it’s in a less-than-kosher manner.
The site masters post the photos and videos, along with some oh-so-clever captions, mocking the subjects. While some of the photos might warrant a good verbal slap in the face, most of the photos are innocent snap shots of “ponies” (as the site refers to SMU students) enjoying themselves with friends. Regardless, anyone is open to lame criticism from the site creators.
The site goes after people’s weight, clothing choices and possible plastic surgery, among other valid markers of personality. Most of the pictures on the site were obviously taken while people were goofing off with friends, not posing for a professional photo shoot they intended for the world to see. A Web site shouldn’t take a fun-loving pastime away from people. It’s like making fun of people for watching baseball – Rangers fans shouldn’t have to wonder if they’re eating their ballpark hot dogs like the cool kids do.
We see this site as an immature mouthpiece for someone angry with the denizens of the big D. We might be willing to give the site more credit if its writers could come up with captions half as clever as The Daily Campus’ headlines. So far DirtyD’s best material is chronically inundated with the words “D-town D-Bag.” They even coined the term “pubestache.” Genius material right there.
Our advice on the site is a similar to an after-school special. If you have been hurt, offended or embarrassed by this Web site, don’t let it bother you. Move on quickly, because anyone who has this much time on their hands is obviously compensating for a void in their lives.
Let DirtyDTown and its creators enjoy their 15 minutes of fame. The site’s lack of credibility will be the driving force behind its projected quick departure from our list of recently visited pages.
