In each city with a Conference-USA team, the local media votes on post-season conference honors. For the 2006 season the media honored SMU’s quarterback Justin Willis with the conference Freshman of the Year.
Willis spent the 2006 season breaking records for the Mustangs. Willis’ 29 total touchdowns, 26 passing touchdowns and his 67.4 completion percentage set new records at SMU.
His completion percentage also set a NCAA record for a freshman.
Ten players were also awarded by the conference media, three to the first team, four on the second team and three on third team.
Seniors Adrian Haywood, Justin Rogers and Joe Sturdivant all made the first team All-Conference defense.
Ben Poynter, Reggie Carrington, Cory Muse and Jessie Henderson were all named to the second team All-Conference. Poynter is a junior center, Carrington a senior linebacker, and Henderson is a sophomore kick returner.
The third team members are senior tight end Ryan Kennedy, freshman wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and sophomore punter Thomas Morstead.
The 10 honorees made the Mustangs the third most represented school behind division champions Houston and Southern Mississippi.
The coaches will make their selections on Dec. 6.
