Kudos to the football team!
Ed Board is completely amazed at the tenacity of our Mustangs this season. We don’t know if you realize how big of a deal this is for our university. The last time we were bowl eligible was in 1997.
The last time we actually went to a bowl was 1984. We’re guessing a lot of you weren’t even born yet.
In 2003, we had an 0-12 season, (seniors and super-seniors, you will remember that embarrassing time in our recent history).
Only twenty short years ago, SMU received the death penalty. (For those of you who don’t know what that means-our football program was completely taken away due to illegal recruiting infractions).
It’s a wonder we’re even considered Division I.
Phil Bennett was hired to win football games, and doggoneit, he’s finally done it. All of these players were recruited and trained under Bennett, which is a huge positive.
A win against Rice this weekend will most definitely put us in a bowl.
At the end of the first half of the Tulsa game on Saturday, Nov. 18, everyone thought we were going to lose. Lo and behold, we came back and kicked some Golden Hurricane butt.
This weekend, there is no excuse for you to not be in the bleachers with your hot chocolate and clad in red. This is the biggest and most important game SMU has played since we got the Death Penalty.
Almost half of everyone enrolled at SMU is from the state of Texas. Therefore, those of you from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin (among the surrounding areas), can easily get to Houston.
We know that there are a lot of big projects and papers coming up, but you have all week before then to get it done. Please go out and support our players because fan encouragement can really make a difference in the outcome of the game. Plus, Rice kids are all nerds and probably don’t understand what a first down is.
Students, seniors especially, this is your chance to witness history in the making.
Wouldn’t it be cool to end your time at SMU by cheering on the Mustangs at a bowl game?! What a turnaround from four years ago.
