The Algur H. Meadows School of Arts made an addition to their executive staff this past summer. Dr. Patricia A. Alvey now serves as the Distinguished Chair and Director of the Temerlin Advertising Institute.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Murray State University and a PhD in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Alvey has the background and experience to elevate Temerlin to new heights.
Dr. Alvey comes from the lush green town of Owensboro, Kentucky, which she left to attend Murray State University and then continue her graduate studies at Austin. After a successful career, Dr. Alvey served as the Executive Director of the Advertising Graduate program at VCU.
Now back in Texas, Alvey looks forward to helping the program gain more success than years before.
“This year we are continuing work on raising a 10 million dollar endowment, of which we have 2.5 already. I plan to enrich and expand the creative program so as to sharpen the technical capabilities in that department of Temerlin,” Dr. Alvey said. “It is important to support the exemplary work of faculty and students.”
For those interested in advertising majors, revisions have been made in the curriculum. More credit hours and a few more classes have been added to the requirements, as well as a foreign language.
“The catalog on the website has been updated in order to ensure quality… students interested in the program should know how to write well,” Alvey said.
Students in the program are hoping to learn and grow a lot more since ‘Dr. Patty’ has taken the helm at Temberlin. First year students taking intro courses also feel good about starting out the year with someone new to the program as well and hope to learn and grow along with Alvey.
“I want to be apart of making this program better. I think that Dr. Alvey will be a great part in helping us all take the institute to a new level,” First year Uzo Awa said.
Among other staff members, Alvey’s presence is already making them feel good about the future of the program.
“She [Dr. Alvey] is really sweet and has been wonderful working with so far. She a great and will make an impact on the program,” administrative assistant Sharon Adams said.
Alvey holds advertising close to her heart. Her profession has brought her a long way in life and contributes much of her success to what she describes as an art form.
She feels that advertising has taught her professionalism and the importance behind the messages produced in the field of advertising. Her hopes are for every student who leaves the program to get the same deep meaning she got from it, and make their experiences greater.
“I challenge our graduates to be young professionals who bring ethics, creativity and critical thinking to continue to make it an exciting and rewarding profession,” Dr. Alvey said.
