The SMU Mustangs landed their third consecutive win last night against the Arkansas Razorbacks, continuing on a perfect start to the season.

The last two minutes proved to be the most exciting and nail biting. During the duration of the game, teams flipped back and forth, battling for the lead. At the half, the Mustangs (3-0) were trailing 26-24, despite a last minute layup from Junior Alisha Filmore.

“I thought the last 10 minutes was the difference …We played so much more aggressively in the last two minutes,” head coach Rhonda Rompola said.

With two minutes left in the game the Mustangs were only ahead by three points as both teams jostled for the win. Right before the final minute, senior Brittany Gilliam, got her 12th point of the night during a break away layup. The Mustangs have not beat Arkansas since December of 1993.

With 50 seconds left in the game and the Mustangs leading 69-66, Charity Ford of Arkansas made two free throw shots, shortly followed by a time out called by Rompola. Finally, with 24 seconds left in the game Christine Elliot , earned her 11th point of the game for SMU and then shot a free throw, putting the score at 72-68.

According to Rompola, Elliot’s three point shot was the play of the game. After ten seconds of time outs and free throws, the SMU Mustangs remain undefeated with a final score of 76- 71.

The most points for the Mustangs came from junior Raquel Christian with 18. Gilliam followed with 14. Mustang’s key to success last night, was the ability to turn defensive plays into offensive plays as well as finding inside shooters Coach Rompola explained.

The team will next travel to New Orleans to take on the University of New Orleans Privateers. New Orleans won their season opener against McNeese State. The Mustangs have not played the Privateers in recent seasons. The game will take place November 21 at 4:30 p.m.
