Three graduate students will participate in the 11th annual M2008 Data Mining Conference on Oct. 27-28 in Las Vegas.
The team consists of Ph.D. candidates Stefan Avdjiev, Jayjit Roy and Manan Roy. Economics Professor Tom Fomby sponsors the team.
The team competed in the 2008 Data Mining Shootout, which is a competition presented by SAS Institute, the Central Michigan University Research Corporation and Dow Chemical. It offers “the data mining academic community an opportunity to put their data mining skills to the test,” according to the SAS website.
Teams in the competition are given a problem to solve using data mining methods. This year’s problem involved “a hypothetical airline company operating at three airports and anticipating weather delays and cancellations,” according to an SMU press release.
The team finished in the top three, and will find out which spot they earned at the conference.
