News brief

Athletic Director Jim Copeland, who announced this month that he would retire in May, will take a medical leave of absence from the university to recover from a kidney surgery that is reportedly scheduled for this week.

According to a Dallas Morning News report, Copeland is expected to be out four to six weeks for recovery.

John Koerner, SMU’s senior associate AD for business, will take over as acting director. SMU President R. Gerald Turner told the DMN all athletic functions will continue fully while Copeland is out.
