A cure for the stuck-in-Dallas spring break blues

While most SMU students are flying out of Dallas faster than you can say coconut tanning oil, some may find themselves still roaming the city’s streets searching for something to entertain themselves during the week off from class.

The Dallas Center for Contemporary Art is hosting its fifth anniversary “Wish!” art auction from 7 p.m. until midnight this Saturday, located at 2801 Swiss Ave. The Center urges its attendees to wear red and boasts a delicious dinner and a martini bar. I guess it figures the more martinis, the higher one will bid on art, while looking ravishing in red.

While it might scare the ‘bajeesus’ out of some, “Riverdance” taps into Dallas today and continues its leg flailing jigs through the March 12 at Bass Performance Hall.

The touring company of the Tony-award winning play “42nd Street” makes its way onto Performance Drive in Richardson on March 10-12.

St. Patrick’s Day floods into Dallas with two parades. The first one begins (drinking warm green beer) at 11 a.m. on the 11th on Lower Greenville Ave. The second is a bit more family friendly starting at 2 p.m. the next day, downtown at Pearl and Ross streets. The proceeds from the downtown parade benefit the Autism Treatment Centers of Texas.

Most people decide to class up their lonely Tuesday nights with a bottle of Cabernet and a block of some bleu. However, the Mozzarella Company, located at 2944 Elm St., has decided that wine is much to fine for its delicious cheeses. It’s hosting a beer and cheese pairing class on Tuesday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The fancy circus is coming to town just north of the Galleria starting March 14. “Cavalia,” created by one of the dreamers of Cirque du Soleil, Normano Latourelle, comes to Dallas for a few days of circus freak fun under a sparkly white tent, just thin enough to see the stars. As a plus to the carnie-clad event, spring break discounts are offered on ticket prices.

Now I’ve got a give a shout-out to one of my Hebrew brethren, even those outside of the Jewish faith can appreciate. Matisyahu, the Hassidic reggae artist takes the stage on March 15 at 8 p.m. at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie. So strap on your yarmulke with attached fake dreads and boogie on down to Bob Marley with a bit of Cantor Rubenstein. The Strokes will also play the Nokia Theater on March 17. Amen.

The road to the NCAA Final Four begins in Dallas on March 17 and 18 at the American Airlines Center for the men, while the ladies will play at Reunion Arena. If you can still get tickets, get your brackets out and start those pools. It’s March Madness kids!

If you deny that your favorite fashion accoutrement is not a sparkly rhinestone, we know you will be lying. Bedazzled jackets and sweaters were at the height of fashion in the ’80s and still have their place on the backs of Hebrew schoolteachers and my great aunt Ruth. The Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS is hosting an all-out bidding war for bedazzled denim jackets, designed by local and national celebrities and designers on March 18 at p.m. The evening at the Hilton Anatole Hotel also features a performance from Erykah Badu. One can only wonder if her head wrap will be dazzling as well.
