“The Ultimate Gift” tells the story of an unappreciative trust-fund baby Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller) who goes on a journey of self-discovery.
When Jason’s wealthy grandfather Red Stevens (James Garner) passes away, his assets are not distributed among his family members as anticipated. Red’s greedy children are given little or no inheritance.
However, Red has something special included in the will for Jason.
Red sees potential in his grandson and wants to take the opportunity to instill in him various life lessons. Red devises a series of tasks that Jason must complete in order to receive “the ultimate gift.”
During his journey, Jason realizes that money can never replace friends, family and happiness.
After Jason is stripped of his possessions and forced to live on a park bench, he meets Emily, a young child diagnosed with Leukemia (Abigail Breslin) and her mother, Alexia (Alli Hillis).
As a romantic relationship develops between Alexia and Jason, he continues to complete his tasks to reach his ultimate goal.
The acting in this film varies. Ten-year-old “Little Miss Sunshine” star and Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin’s acting skills far surpass those of her adult costars Fuller and Hillis.
Often Fuller overacts, and his character is a bit awkward. Likewise, no Academy Award is in store for Hillis.
However, veteran actor James Garner brings some legitimacy to the film, even though his role is limited and doesn’t really allow him to showcase his acting abilities.
The experience of actors Brian Dennehy, who plays the role of Gus the rancher, and Bill Cobbs, who plays Mr. Hamilton, Red’s law partner, balance out the inexperience of other actors.
The movie isn’t exactly horrible – but it’s pretty mundane. It’s a lot like a parable, something a religious instructor might want you to watch.
Those interested in films like “Millions” and “Pay It Forward” should take the time to see “The Ultimate Gift.”
However, if predictability and a lack of action don’t interest you, save your $10 at the box office and see something else.
