The No. 65 SMU men’s tennis team faces its first conference opponent on Sunday when the team hosts No. 22 Tulsa. The men are 5-5 this season after a 4-3 victory over TCU on Wednesday.
Tulsa is 8-3 this season with a win over No. 69 Penn on Tuesday. Tulsa’s roster includes two top players, No. 5 Arnau Brugues and No. 120 Will Gray. Brugues holds a 7-1 record at No. 1 singles for Tulsa, while Gray has a 2-5 at No. 3, 3-6 overall.
Tulsa also has two ranked doubles pairs on its roster. At No. 29 nationally are Lucques Massadorp and Ricardo Soriano, while teammates Diego Cammacho and Ross Cunningham hold the No. 41 position.
The Mustangs’ No. 1 singles player, Alex Skrypko, still holds the No. 43 spot in national rankings and Federico Murgier, who plays both No. 2 and No. 3 singles for SMU, currently holds the No. 125 spot.
SMU’s contest with Tulsa will be the squad’s eighth match against a top 70 team this season. The Mustangs’ five losses have come from only top 70 teams and SMU has taken victories from No. 66 TCU and the University of Iowa, who is currently ranked No. 75.
Last season, SMU and Tulsa met in April with the Mustangs taking the win 4-3.
The Mustangs host Columbia on March 13 at the Bent Tree Country Club before taking a road trip to California to meet San Francisco and the University of California-Berkeley.
