The SMU men’s tennis team was busy over spring break, going 2-2 against opponents from across the country. SMU is now 7-7 for the season after the four matches.
The Mustangs started off with a 4-1 loss to conference opponent No. 22 Tulsa before taking a win from the men of Columbia University.
Tulsa was the first C-USA contest for the Mustangs this season, making them 0-1 in conference play. Adolfo Solares notched the only singles win of the day for the Mustangs at No. 6. He defeated Olof Sjolund 6-4, 6-3.
No. 43 Alex Skrypko fell to No. 5 Arnau Brugues at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2. The No. 1 singles match was the first to finish.
After hosting two matches in Dallas, SMU hit the road to take on San Francisco and No. 35 University of California-Berkeley in the second annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Classic. The Mustangs swept the Dons of USF 4-0 before falling to Cal 4-2.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Robin Faghen took the only win for the Mustangs against the Golden Bears. Kallim Stewart of Cal dropped straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to Faghen.
At No. 1, No. 43 Alex Skrypko fell to No. 23 Pierre Mouillon 6-4, 6-3. Skrypko and partner Federico Murgier managed a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, over Tyler Browne and John Pettit of California.
No. 125 Murgier played No. 3 singles, but did not finish his match against Daniel Sebescen. Oivind Alver stretched Eoin Heavey to three sets at No. 4 before losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
SMU prepares to host nine straight matches beginning with a double-header on March 24 versus Oklahoma State and Centenary College.
