Program Council will continue their film series tonight with a sneak preview of “The Invention of Lying.”
With an all-star cast including Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey and Rob Lowe, and from the creators of BBC’s “The Office” and HBO’s “Extras,” students are sure to be in for a good laugh.
Ricky Gervais, the star and creator of BBC’s “The Office” asks audiences to imagine a world in which everyone could only speak the truth. Tiny white lies, withheld information or concealed opinions simply do not exist, no matter the expense of others’ feelings.
In “The Invention of Lying,” Gervais creates “an alternate reality in which lying – even the concept of a lie – does not exist,” according to the film’s official Web site.
From this setting, enters the main character Mark, played by Gervais. Mark is a loser-type character, looking for success in love and work, but seems to be failing in this world of absolute truth.
One day, Mark stumbles upon his gift of lying through an average daily occurrence. At this point, life as he knows it begins to shift gears.
In a world where people take every word as absolute truth, Mark finds his lying to be quite advantageous.
Audiences are taken along a hilarious journey as Mark uses his lies to reshape his life.
In the end, the question remains: Which is better, uncensored truth or uncontrollable lies?
Students can decide for themselves in an advanced showing in the Hughes-Trigg Theatre tonight at 8.
“The Invention of Lying” opens in theatres everywhere Oct. 2.
